Distance Education and the Military

It is no surprise that the military is involved in distance educational opportunities for the thousands of men and women that are a part of our armed forces.  It wasn’t until I talked to my son about him being enrolled in school now that I realized that branches like the Navy could make a good use of sailors time while at see by giving them the opportunity to further their education.

One example of distance education in the military is the Naval War College which offers classes on Strategy, Operations And Military History as well as courses that cover specific regions of the world.  Even though I am proud of the education that I received at Ashford I would love to take some of these classes to add to my knowledge base.  Alas these classes are only available to military personnel and federal employees.

There also appears to be joint operations between the branches available through the Air War College website but do no quote me on this.  If nothing else it is a great source of information for individuals in the military to start their journey into online education.

What resources like this prove is that we live in a time now that it is possible to peruse a higher education under a number of circumstances.  I would think that the military would have there scheduling and delivery at such a high level of precision that any recruit would be able to complete an undergrad or graduate degree in a short period of time.  Not to mention possibly have it paid for.

I will keep you updated on the progress of my son taking online classes I am curious at to the effectiveness of the program.  As a taxpayer I am curious as to how my dollars are spent to educate the members of the US Armed Forces.
